The sky was on fire for this morning’s fire lookout hike. It’s starting to get blustery, so I was glad I packed well. I had coat and gloves on hand to ensure I enjoyed my time at the top.
In 1833, Dr. William Tolmie sailed from London to Fort Vancouver where he awaited assignment. After seeing "The Mountain," he was captivated and subsequently made a visit to collect "herbs of which to make medicine." You’ll find a hike in Mount Rainier National Park’s northwest corner that leads to the Tolmie Peak fire lookout tower. Built in 1933 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the lookout is a historic structure designated a part of the Mount Rainier National Historic Landmark District. Once at the summit, enjoy impressive views of Mount Rainier and the sparkling water of Eunice below, along with the Olympics in the distance as well as Mount St. Helens, the Seattle skyline, and on a clear day, Baker and Glacier as well.
